2013 BOCCE FOR BROOKS

All Penderites and their friends are invited to Bocce in the Pines, a fundraiser for Brooks Point, on Sunday, July 14, at Karl Hamson’s field. The event promises a relaxing and congenial time for all keen on preserving one of the largest and most beautiful undeveloped coastal headlands in the Gulf Islands.

This will be the second Brooks Point bocce tournament, following a similar event in 2011 which raised $5,120 to help purchase a remaining strip of land to complete this popular regional park.  Entry will be by donation, with tax receipts offered to those contributing $10 or more. We’ve almost reached our goal, so please be generous.

The field is just behind the Community Hall, so there’s easy access, with parking on the Hall grounds and on the Hamson field.  The sponsors, who include Paul and Monica Petrie, Karl Hamson, Hedi Kovacs, Bill Deverell and Jan Kirkby, promise that no experience is necessary – newbies and veterans have an equal chance of winning.

Anyone with a set of bocce balls is kindly invited to bring them along. Rules will be posted and handed out, but they simply involve two-person teams competing as they pursue bocce balls around courts laid out in grassy areas in Karl and Hedi’s unique pine forest.

Residents, as well as local businesses and organizations, are invited to form up two-member teams and to register between 1 and 1:30 PM. Don’t have a partner?  The organizers will provide one.  Or you may pre-register your teams with Monica Petrie miraonpender@shaw.ca or by calling her at 629-3419.

The tournament itself will begin on the dot at 1:30 and carry on to half past five, when prizes will be handed out.

And to top it off, the grounds will be well equipped with a beer and wine garden, Lion’s smokies and hot dogs for sale, and a children’s play area.  No pets, please.

Come, cheer on your favorite team, and enjoy the festivities.
